Station on track for restoration
Cromford Mill
It is hoped the railway will transport visitors around the Derwent Mills
A heritage group is to carry out a £263,000 restoration of a 19th Century Derbyshire railway station.

The Arkwright Society has secured the cash from the Railway Heritage Trust and several other local and national groups to repair Cromford Station.

The station building, which is suffering dry rot, will be restored and temporarily used as office space.

The group then wants the station to be used to by visitors to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Interim period

The attraction, which includes the Cromford and Masson mills, was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2001.

Christopher Charlton, director of the Arkwright Society said it was necessary for the station to be used as offices for an interim period of around five to 10 years until train services became more frequent.

"By taking the station into ownership, we will be able to make it available at the right time when the train services have improved and the World Heritage Site has developed," he said.

The station was used as a backdrop for the cover of Oasis single Some Might Say in 1995.
