Bride given away by mother, 101
Hazel Sharcroft (about to become Hazel Smith) with her mother Edna
Mrs Sharcroft felt it was her duty to give her daughter away
A North Derbyshire woman has been given away at her church wedding by her 101-year-old mother.

Hazel Smith, 68, had known her groom John, a 70-year-old retired farmer, for years but their romance only got under way last year.

The couple tied the knot in their home town of Holmsfield on Saturday.

Mr Smith said his new mother-in-law Edna Sharcroft felt it was her duty to give her daughter away as other family members were not available.

Mrs Sharcroft said: "It was a pleasure to give Hazel to John and everything went very nicely."

The new Mrs Smith said she felt "happy, excited" and her husband said it had been a wonderful day.
