The construction of a monorail has been suggested as a possible way of cutting congestion in Derby.
The rapid transport system is among a number of ideas to be considered if the city wins a big government grant.
The government wants local authorities to think of new ways of cutting car use in their area.
The city council wants £160,000 for a study into future transport but has already said a major solution would cost tens of millions.
It is spending millions on the Connecting Derby road redesign programme but has already said a congestion charge is unlikely unless adopted by other cities in the region.
Martin Repton, the cabinet member for planning and transport, felt a monorail would be a pretty high tech solution to a growing problem.
He said: "We are going to have a look at monorail technology and see if it applicable to the city."
