Seven hour wait for ambulance
Dorothy Byron
Dorothy Byron back home after her ordeal
A woman who will be 100 years old in August waited over seven hours for an ambulance to take her to hospital.

Dorothy Byron cut her leg at her care home in Mickleover, Derby, on 6 June and needed stitches.

A nurse rang for an ambulance to take her to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary three miles away, but it was seven hours before it turned up.

After treatment, Mrs Byron then had to wait three hours for another ambulance to take her back to the care home.

'Quite traumatised'

Jennifer Bexon, the owner of the The Limes care home said: "The following day, Dorothy was ill, she was sick and she was quite traumatised by the whole episode."

East Midlands Ambulance service has apologised for any distress that Mrs Byron suffered.

They have said that an investigation into the incident is planned.

The service has just announced an £11m recruitment drive for dozens of new staff to help prevent similar delays happening in the future.
