Leisure centres granted reprieve
People who campaigned to save three Amber Valley leisure centres earmarked for closure have won a partial victory.

Following an external report, the sites will remain open but the exact nature of facilities is yet to be decided.

The borough council is considering whether to demolish the centre at Ripley and replace it with a 25-metre swimming pool and a fitness gym.

Heanor and Alfreton are likely to be refurbished with new pools but details have not been decided.

The council confirmed further building survey work needs to be carried out at Heanor to see if the existing sports hall can be retained as part of the proposed new facility.

Council Leader Alan Cox said: "After taking into account the views of people in Amber Valley, councillors have come up with a solution that I'm convinced is the best way forward.

"We will keep the consultation process open as the plans progress."
