Police have launched a murder inquiry after the death of a 77-year-old man in Glossop on Sunday.
An ambulance was called to Alport Grove in the town at around 1930 BST after reports of an assault.
The victim was found unconscious on the floor with head injuries. He died in hospital at around 2130 BST.
A 34-year-old local man has been arrested and is in custody. Officers have made house-to-house inquiries and will interview other witnesses.
The victim died at Hope Hospital in Manchester after being transferred from Tameside Hospital.
A post mortem examination was due to be carried out on Monday.
