Security alert closes cinema

A Derby cinema has been evacuated by the emergency services due to a security scare.

About a hundred customers were escorted out of the UCI cinema at the Meteor Centre on Tuesday night.

A thorough search of the building was carried out by police accompanied by cinema workers but nothing suspicious was found.

The cinema was closed for the rest of the night.

Teenager in hospital after crash

A teenager has been seriously injured in an accident in Derbyshire on Monday night.

The 17-year-old from Langley Mill was involved in a collision on Mansfield Road in Heanor at about 2230 BST.

He is recovering in Nottingham's Queens Medical Centre.

Police want anyone who saw a silver Nissan Micra or black Suzuki hatchback in the area of Tescos or Heanor marketplace at the time of the accident to contact them.

Man hospitalised with head injuries

Police are looking for witnesses after a man was found with serious head injuries in Derby early on Sunday morning.

The 37-year-old Derby man was discovered at Stafford Street and Friargate at 0230 BST.

Derbyshire Police said the man was in serious but stable condition at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

They do not yet know if the man was assaulted or fell - and they want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time.

Four people escape house fire

Four people have been taken to hospital after being rescued from a fire at their home in Derby.

Fire crews were called to the house on Cowsley Road at Chaddesden on Sunday night.

They managed to get all four people, including two children, out of a first floor window.

The fire service says the incident was caused by a chip pan fire.

Five car crash closes road

A main road in Derbyshire was closed for several hours on Sunday morning due to an accident.

Five cars were involved in the crash which happened at 0100 BST on the southbound carriageway of the A38 close to the A50 junction near Willington.

One person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency services closed the road until about 0900 BST while they cleared the carriageway.

New bishop sought

The search has started for a new bishop in Derby following the announcement of retirement of Rt Rev Jonathon Bishop.

Bishop Jonathon will leave his post in May 2005.

Meetings will be held within and outside the church to provide input in the selection process, a spokesman for the Diocese of Derby said.

The first public meeting to discuss the issue will be held at Derby Cathedral on Tuesday 12 October at 1830 BST.
