A climber survives an avalanche in the Lake District

Renewed warnings have been issued about the risks of avalanches in the Lake District after a climber survived a snow slide near Seathwaite.

The man was led to safety by mountain rescue volunteers after the incident at Window Gully, Borrowdale, on Wednesday.

Last month, two men were swept 750ft (228m) down a fell when an avalanche struck near Patterdale.

Cumbria police urged visitors to the Lake District to be aware of the ongoing risks of snow slides.

Air ambulance

A Cumbria Police spokesman said the climber was "lucky to be alive" after the latest incident.

He said: "The man had been seen preparing to climb Window gully, but a few minutes later witnesses reported an avalanche.

"Mountain rescue volunteers from three teams, dog handlers, together with an RAF helicopter and air ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

"Luckily, the climber was found safe and well. He was very fortunate."
