Pedestrian dies after collision in Windermere

A man has died in hospital after receiving serious injuries in a collision with a Volkswagen car in Windermere on Christmas Day.

William Byrne, 78, of Birthwaite, was walking along the A591 near to St Mary's Church when the collision took place.

A 63-year-old man from Windermere has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed by police pending further inquiries until 16 March.

Mr Byrne died at the Royal Lancaster hospital on Monday.

Police are appealing for information.
