A woman killed in a crash in south Cumbria was a former RAF officer who had served in Kosovo and Iraq. Michelle Jurd was driving her two young children when she was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry on the A590 near Kendal on Wednesday. The 41-year-old, from Grange-over-Sands, later died in hospital. During her career in the RAF she was the first female officer to qualify as a navigator on Puma aircraft, and rose to the rank of squadron leader. In Iraq she led an operation deep into enemy territory during a sandstorm to recover soldiers likely to be overrun by the enemy. She left the RAF following the birth of her first daughter, now four. Her second daughter is two. Neil Jurd, her husband of 13 years, described her as an inspiring person, with a smile that could light up any room. He said: "Michelle was a wonderful and committed mother, who made family life an adventure. "Immensely kind, generous, caring and thoughtful, Michelle was a talented musician, a capable artist, an incredible cook and a superb interior designer. "She will be sorely missed by her many family and friends."
