Flood hit show 'may be relocated'

Flooded Cumberland Show
The show was cancelled after an emergency meeting

The Cumberland Show may be relocated after flooding caused the cancellation of this year's event.

The annual agricultural show has been held at the Rickerby Park site, near the River Eden, since 1991.

High water levels posed a risk while the heavy rain also made driving conditions difficult on Saturday.

Show secretary Donella Rozario said the show's location would have to be questioned because of the increased threat of summer floods.

Weather patterns

The decision to cancel Saturday's event was taken at an emergency meeting between organisers, the Environment Agency, the Health and Safety Executive and Cumbria Police.

Mrs Rozario said: "In years gone by we didn't expect to have floods in the summer.

"I think weather patterns have changed - floods happened in the winter and it's never been a problem before.

"Of course we'll obviously have to question the site of the show after what's occurred."

All those affected by the show's cancellation will be contacted over the next few weeks, she added.
