Camera crackdown on illegal bikes

Motorcycles and crusher
Six motorcycles have been crushed this year

Police are targeting illegal motorcycle riders in west Carlisle by using video cameras to identify offenders.

Officers are recording bikers in hotspot areas and hope to use the footage to achieve successful prosecutions in the courts.

Pc Ian Keir, of Cumbria Police, said vehicles used illegally would also be seized and possibly crushed.

He said 12 motorcycles were impounded for illegal use between January and May, of which six were crushed.

Pc Kerr said: "The youths who we observe riding motorcycles illegally are not only a danger to themselves but to the general public.

"We are aware of the hotspot locations and we will take the necessary steps to prosecute them."
