Five-day shutdown at tyre plants

Tyre manufacturer Pirelli has announced a further shutdown period at its two factories in the UK.

Production will cease at its plants in Carlisle and Burton-upon-Trent between 27 June and 1 July.

Bosses said the move was a response to lower than expected demand for tyres across Europe.

In March, the firm cut 20 jobs at the Carlisle factory in Dalston Road. Previous shutdowns took place at both plants earlier this year.

A Pirelli spokesman said: "The company appreciates this is a worrying and financially challenging period for our employees however this action is necessary for securing the future of Pirelli in the UK."
