Powers to move on yobs extended

Police powers to tackle anti-social behaviour in south Cumbria have been extended after being hailed a success.

The first dispersal order to be used in Barrow was issued in December, following complaints about anti-social behaviour by groups of youths.

The order allows police to move people on and order them not to return. If they do it is a criminal offence.

A police spokesman said the order had been used 140 times and would now be extended until May.

Sgt Mark Rawlinson said: "We are pleased to report that in recent weeks, the area has seen real improvements and we have had a significant reduction in our calls for service since the order has been in place.

"Although it is a temporary measure, the dispersal order has been making a positive difference to the quality of life of the surrounding neighbourhoods."
