Rescuers' warning to fell walkers

Only experienced walkers should go onto the fells, mountain rescuers say

Mountain rescuers have urged inexperienced walkers to stay clear of the Cumbrian fells in icy conditions.

The warning comes after the death of two walkers in the Lake District late last week.

On Friday another walker had to be taken to hospital after falling about 300ft on Bowfell in Langdale.

Nick Owen, of the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, said only the most experienced walkers should venture onto the fells.

Heavy snow and plummeting temperatures have created treacherous conditions for visitors to the Cumbrian fells in recent days.

Mr Owen said: "People should by all means come and have a look at the scenery because it is superb.

"But the conditions at the moment mean that they are hiding a beast underneath.

"With the right equipment and the right experience it is not a problem.

"But otherwise this is an exceptionally dangerous place at the moment."
