Machete used in attempted robbery

A man was threatened by two men armed with a machete and a hammer in an attempted robbery at his home in a remote area of Cumbria.

Armed police and a helicopter were called in to search the scene, near Ulverston, on Monday evening.

The 64-year-old victim escaped without any significant injuries during the incident on A5087 near Aldingham and the men then fled the scene.

Investigations continue and police are appealing for information.

The two offenders are described as wearing dark, camouflage clothing and both had their faces covered.

Det Insp Dave Banks said: "This is an exceptionally rare incident in Cumbria and we are doing everything in our power to trace the offenders and bring them to justice.

"We'd ask local residents, specifically farmers who may be out amongst fields or hedgerows, to be vigilant and report any sightings of abandoned clothing or weapons the offenders may have discarded as they made off from the scene."
