Go-ahead for academy on two sites

Plans for an academy based on two existing school sites have been given the go-ahead by councillors in Cumbria.

The £40m facility in Barrow would replace Alfred Barrow, Parkview and Thorncliffe secondary schools.

Most people who responded to a public consultation said they wanted it to be based at Thorncliffe and Parkview school rather than at just one site.

The academy would be sponsored by Barrow Sixth Form College, Furness College and the University of Cumbria.

The two-site option was approved at a Cumbria County Council cabinet meeting.

Anne Burns, Deputy Leader and cabinet member for children's services, said: "Today's decision ensures much-needed investment on an unprecedented scale in education in Barrow.

"It is a once-in-a-generation chance to build a bright future for the town's for secondary education."
