Tributes have been paid to the former Bishop of Carlisle who died at the age of 76 after a long illness.

The Right Reverend Ian Harland passed away early on Saturday at Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope.

The Bishop of Bradford described him as a "gracious man who was very supportive and greatly valued and loved for his gentle wisdom".

Bishop Harland retired to the Diocese of Bradford in 2002 after 11 years of service in Carlisle.

The Bishop of Bradford, the Right Reverend David James, added: "He was very supportive to me as a Bishop and I greatly valued his gentle wisdom.

"As we give thanks to God for Ian and his love for us we also remember his family in our prayers."

Bishop Harland's body will be received into St Andrew's Gargrave in Skipton, North Yorkshire on 1 January and he will be cremated the following day.
