People with limited mobility are being given a helping hand to shop in a town centre in Cumbria.

The Workington Shopmobilty scheme offers wheelchairs and scooters to those who may find it difficult to get around on foot.

The project is a partnership between Allerdale Borough Council and Allerdale Disability Association (ADA).

It uses specially trained staff and is based at an office in the town's Parksafe multi-storey car park.

Stella Howarth, chair of ADA, said: "This project is aimed at independence and empowerment for all."

Councillor David Wilson, executive member with responsibility for corporate access to services, said: "We hope this will become another jewel in the crown of Workington and help achieve the council's vision of making Allerdale a great place to live, work and visit."

Anyone wishing to use the service, which operates during the daytime from Monday to Saturday, has to register by bringing two forms of identification to the Workington Shopmobility office.
