Police warning over bogus workmen

Elderly people in Cumbria have been warned to beware bogus officials after a spate of distraction burglaries.

In the latest incident on Monday, two men pretending to be water company officials got into a house in Newton Street in Ulverston.

Other incidents have been reported in Carnforth, Levens, and Penrith over the past ten weeks and is it believed the same two men could be responsible.

In each case they claimed to be fixing leaks, and show no identification.

Sgt Helen Ellis said: "We would like to remind the public always to check and ask for identification when people call at their door and want to gain access to their home.

"Genuine utilities workers and other officials will always carry and produce identification when visiting premises, and will be happy for you to call their employers to double check.

"If in doubt do not let them into your house and contact the police."
