A Cumbrian farmer accused of killing his wife was in bed with his lover when police arrested him, a court heard.

Robert Wilson, 40, denies murdering his wife Jane, 53, who was found dead under a tractor at their farm in Kirkandrews-on-Eden, near Carlisle, on 1 December.

He was arrested four months later and admitted to police he had started a relationship with a local woman after the death, the court heard.

The jury has previously been told he had an affair with another woman.

The farmer had told police that he had an "open marriage" and his wife had urged him to be discreet in his relationship with Kathy McNeil, 48, Carlisle Crown Court was told.

He had met Ms McNeil in a Spanish bar 14 months before the death.

Mr Wilson stood to gain around £400,000 from life insurance policies following his wife's death, the court heard.

Her death was initially treated as an accident, after her husband of seven years claimed he accidentally ran over her in his tractor.

A pathologist earlier told the jury that Mrs Wilson probably died before her head was crushed by the tractor.

The trial continues.
