Tourist van death was accidental

A German tourist killed after being hit by a van in Cumbria probably looked the wrong way before crossing the road, an inquest has heard.

Brunhilde Diehn, 62, from Erfurt, died after being struck by the Ford van outside Kendal bus station on 15 May.

Witnesses told the inquest that Mrs Diehn had crossed the road as if expecting the traffic to come from the opposite direction.

Coroner Ian Smith recorded a verdict of accidental death.

A police accident investigator told the court that the van driver probably did not have time to do more than put his foot to the brake before hitting the tourist.

Mrs Diehn, who was on a coach tour, died in Lancaster Infirmary.
