Toddler hit on drive 'critical'

A toddler is in hospital in a critical condition after being struck by a car in the driveway of the family home.

The one-year-old girl suffered skull fractures in the incident at Chapel Field, Walney, Barrow-in-Furness, at 1040 BST on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police described her injuries as being the result of a "tragic accident".

A silver Nissan has been removed from the scene by officers investigating the incident.

The girl was taken by ambulance to Furness General Hospital for treatment before being transferred by air ambulance to Pendlebury Hospital in Manchester.

The police spokeswoman said: "Chapel Field was cordoned off by police while the scene was examined and was re-opened at approximately 2.15pm.

"At this time the investigation continues although it would appear the little girl's injuries were sustained as a result of a tragic accident which occurred in the driveway of the family home."
