Off-duty policeman makes arrest

An off-duty policeman has made an arrest during a burglary in Cumbria.

PC John Turner, from the Ulverston community team, heard breaking glass at a doctor's surgery in Parklands Drive, Askam in Furness, on Wednesday.

He called for back-up before going onto the site and making an arrest. Cumbria Police said officers had most of the same powers off and on duty.

A 21-year-old local man was arrested and he is now helping officers with their enquiries.
