Mountain rescuers mark milestone

Rescuers are celebrating 75 years of helping climbers trapped on mountains and in caves.

Rescue teams from all over the Lake District are meeting at Ambleside Rugby Club to mark the 75th anniversary of the national service in the UK.

Highlights of the event on Saturday will include demonstrations of helicopter winching, crag rescues and search dog training techniques.

Hundreds of visitors are expected to attend the free event.

A spokesman for the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association said: "The event will give recognition to the 450 rescue volunteers and their families who are totally committed to saving lives on the Lake District fells."
