'Cool-headed' fire crew win award

Firefighters from Cumbria have won an award for their rescue of a man caught up in agricultural machinery.

Two crews, from Brampton and Longtown, were jointly named Team of the Year in the Local Government Association Council Workers of the Year Awards.

They displayed "cool-headedness" while using specialist equipment to dismantle the machine around the farm worker, whose arms had become trapped.

He is now recovering following the incident in Brampton in February.

The teams won the award by picking up the most public nominations, with people voting either online or by text.

Councillor Gary Strong, Cumbria County Council's cabinet member responsible for safer and stronger communities, said: "The cool-headedness and quick thinking shown by the crews in this incident is just one example of the exceptional work our firefighters do in this county.

"Everyone in Cumbria should feel very proud of what they've achieved."
