Six competitors are taking to the stage in the hope of proving they can be a castle's official jester.

Muncaster Castle in Cumbria is thought to be the only castle in the world to appoint a modern day jester.

Its six-day Festival of Fools, which began on Saturday, culminates in a competition for the prestigious title.

On Thursday the six entertainers were being judged on their juggling as well as fire-eating skills, comedic and magic talents.

As well as the title, the winner will receive a crate of ale every month for a year.

The event is being compered by last year's winner, American entertainer Paul Garbanzo.
