Entertainers will be attempting to make fools of themselves as they vie for a historic title.

Muncaster Castle in Cumbria is thought to be the only castle in the world to appoint a modern day jester.

Its six day Festival of Fools, which begins on Saturday, culminates in a competition for the prestigious title.

Six competitors will be judged on their juggling and fire-eating skills and their comedic and magic talents will also be put to the test.

As well as the title, the winner will receive a crate of ale every month for a year.

The event is being compered by last year's winner, American entertainer Paul Garbanzo.

During the festival there will also be performances by comedians, jugglers and musicians.
