Celebrations mark TA's centenary

Celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of of the Territorial Army (TA) are being held in Carlisle .

The city's castle is the venue for the event and the highlights will include marching bands and a military pageant.

The castle has close ties to the TA as a training centre and a base for the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

The military commander of Cumbria Garrison, Lieutenant Colonel Ray Hughes, said he hopes people will turn out in force to the free event.

A "Beating Retreat" ceremony will begin at 1800 BST and include a 20 minute military demonstration by 4th Battalion the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, a march past and the playing of the Last Post.

Nearly 15,000 Territorials have served alongside the regular Army in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The TA now runs the only field hospital in Afghanistan and provides about 10% of British forces.

Since 2003, seven TA soldiers have been killed.
