Lakes crash claims fifth victim

A fifth person has died following a road crash in the Lake District at the weekend, police said.

Claire Edwards, 21, from West Croft Terrace in Lowca, was pronounced dead at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary on Wednesday.

She was the fourth member of her family to die in the tragedy, involving three vehicles on the A595 in Moota, near Cockermouth on Saturday.

A police investigation is continuing and an appeal for witnesses made.

Agnes Graham, 52, her daughter Kathryn, 22, and her sister Mary Kennedy who were all in a Ford Fiesta, also died.

The fifth victim was named as Andrew Pattison, 23, from Whitehaven.n He was driving a Vauxhall Astra which was involved in the accident.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Claire was travelling as the front seat passenger in the Ford Fiesta, in which three other women from her extended family also died, when it collided with a Vauxhall Astra Coupe and a Chrysler Neon.

"The driver and passenger of the Chrysler escaped with minor injuries."
