Town awarded 'slow city' status
Cockermouth's South Street
It is hoped that membership will promote local trade
A Cumbrian town has joined an international movement to help small communities retain their identity.

Cockermouth has been granted membership of Cittaslow, an Italian term meaning "slow city".

It joins Aylsham and Diss in Norfolk, Ludlow in Shropshire, Mold in Wales, Perth, Scotland, and Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland.

The movement, open to towns with fewer than 50,000 residents, promotes local goods and enhances cultural uniqueness.

Applicants are assessed on criteria such as environmental protection and support for local producers.

Margaret Jackson, Deputy Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: "We are delighted with this award. It highlights the qualities of Cockermouth for those who live, work and visit there.

"The quality and pace of life there have long attracted people. This is very special for the town."

It is hoped that Cittaslow status, which recognises a good quality of life at a relaxed pace, will boost tourism in the area.
