Pupil academy moves a step closer
Plans to open an academy in a Cumbrian town have moved a step closer.

The county council's cabinet is being urged to go ahead with plans to reduce the number of secondary schools in the town from five to three.

If councillors agree, Alfred Barrow, Parkview and Thorncliffe Schools will shut, and be replaced with an academy.

The plans have been drawn up to deal with surplus places. It is also being proposed to enlarge St Bernard's Catholic High and Walney schools.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the schools will close in 2009 and the academy will operate on the Parkview site until the new building is ready in 2011.
