Council approves Tesco proposals
The Cloffocks
Traditional football game "Uppies and Downies" is held on the site
Controversial plans to build a Tesco store on grassland in West Cumbria have been approved.

Opponents say Workington's Cloffocks development threatens local shops, and could affect the mass football game "Uppies and Downies" held on the site.

But Allerdale Council said the sale of the 18m site was vital for the continued regeneration of the town.

Deputy leader Margaret Jackson said the decision had been reached in "a transparent and honest way".

Campaigners have pledged to fight the decision.
