Fell walker dies after 300ft fall

A climber has died after falling about 300ft while out fell walking with his son in the Lake District.

Alan Sharples, 60, from Lancaster, is thought to have lost his footing at Sharp Edge on Blencathra, north of the A66 between Penrith and Keswick.

Members of the Keswick mountain rescue team went to his aid. He was then flown to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle by an RAF rescue helicopter.

Cumbria Police said the man died on the way to hospital.
