£2m revamp harbour museum opens
The Beacon Whitehaven
The museum now includes a moving deck simulating life at sea
A museum which celebrates West Cumbria's maritime history has reopened following a £2m revamp.

Whitehaven's Beacon was closed throughout the summer for improvements to create a more "interactive and community orientated experience".

The distinctive harbour-side building now boasts hi-tech exhibitions and an activity centre.

A weekend of celebrations featuring actors and musicians follows the re-opening on Friday.

A moving deck which simulates a vessel under sail has been installed and visitors can also experience the sights, sounds and smells of life at sea.

Arts, crafts and education classes are being organised for adults, and it is hoped that the improved facilities will help schools who wish to use the museum as a teaching resource.
