Walker rescued in icy conditions
Rescuers braved hostile conditions to reach an injured man who slipped on ice while walking in the Lake District.

The accident happened 1,800ft (549m) from the summit of Kirk Fell, with low cloud ruling out a helicopter rescue.

Nearly 30 members of Wasdale and Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Teams helped locate the walker on Tuesday.

He was carried to Ennerdale Valley bottom where an RAF Sea King helicopter airlifted him to hospital with serious head injuries.

Freezing levels were down to 700ft (213m) during the operation, making conditions extremely treacherous, according to Wasdale Mountain Rescue.
