Lottery boost for lake clean-up
Bassenthwaite Lake
The lake is home to rare species of fish and birds
A long-term plan to restore a lakeland site in Cumbria has received a multi-million pound lottery boost.

Planning permission has already been given for a wetland nature reserve at Bassenthwaite Lake.

Now the Heritage Lottery Fund has approved a £2.6m package, which will go towards recruiting specialist staff to co-ordinate the ongoing project.

The aim is to stem harmful sediment and pollution problems and return the water to its clear pre-war state.

Bassenthwaite Lake Restoration Programme manager John Pinder said: "Getting the right people is absolutely crucial to the success of this inspirational programme, which now needs committed and enthusiastic staff to drive it forwards."
