Composers turn away youth gangs
Antonio Vivaldi
It is hoped "uncool" Vivaldi will discourage gatherings of youths
Music by "uncool" composers is being used to deter groups of youngsters from congregating outside three Co-op stores in Cumbria.

The taped music by the likes of Vivaldi is broadcast on external speakers at the outlets in Distington, Millom and Carlisle's Blackwell Road.

All are regarded as having a particular problem with nuisance youngsters.

The company said the initiative had already proved successful in other parts of the country.

'Anti-social behaviour'

Staff inside the stores can adjust the volume as needed.

Karen Douglass, from the Co-op, said: "This was initially trialled in Scandinavia and we thought it would be a good initiative to deter youths from congregating outside the store.

"Obviously they don't like to listen to classical music, it is not cool."

Pc Pete Forster, from Cumbria Police, said: "I think it's an excellent idea.

"I'm aware it has worked in other areas of the country, and any initiative that addresses issues of anti-social behaviour by youngsters is more than welcome."
