Lakes tourism message for Japan
Lake District fell
The Lake District is a popular destination for Japanese tourists
Tourism bosses from Cumbria are to fly out to Japan on a mission to encourage more Far East visitors to the county.

The members of the Lake District Japan Forum have already forged close links with Japanese tour operators.

They will spread the word about the delights of the Lake District to key Japanese businessmen involved in packages, tours and sales.

The region is a popular destination for Japanese tourists who are among the biggest spending overseas visitors.

The trade mission is funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and the tourist operators.

'Peter Rabbit'

It follows the recent filming of Miss Potter in the Lake District, which it is hoped will create a fresh wave of enthusiasm for the author's beloved Lake District.

Penny Watson, from the Cumbria Tourist Board, said: "We know the Japanese are fond of the Lake District and our famous resident Peter Rabbit!

"With a number of developments, including the Miss Potter film, it was considered timely to express our gratitude to them and inform them of what's new to ensure the Lake District remains top of their itineraries."

Peter Mearns, director of marketing at the NWDA, said: "The Lake District, which is the jewel in the crown of Cumbria's £1 billion tourism industry, makes a significant contribution to the Northwest economy.

"The NWDA is therefore delighted to be able to support its promotion to an international audience and looks forward to welcoming more Japanese visitors to the region."
