Cockling by-laws to be considered

Councillors are to consider whether to introduce by-laws to tackle problems caused by large numbers of cocklers coming to Morecambe Bay.

South Lakeland District Council will look at introducing the regulations for the seashore at Ulverston.

Possible by-laws could cover issues that arise from the influx of cocklers including camping and the parking of vehicles on the foreshore.

But a report says such bylaws may put a strain on council manpower.

The council's general purposes committee will consider whether further discussions should take place about the introduction of by-laws at its meeting on Tuesday.

The report says if the council does proceed, extensive consultation will be needed with a wide range of groups.

Earlier this year, Cumbria Police appointed a cockling officer to work with those involved and affected by the cockling industry.

The aim was to improve workers' safety and reduce disruption and nuisance to residents living near cockling sites.
