Headstone tribute for baby Lara
Baby Lara funeral

A headstone has finally been placed at the grave of the unidentified baby found hidden in a concrete block in west Cumbria more than three years ago.

Baby Lara, as she was named by police officers investigating her death, was buried at St Peter's churchyard in Camerton, last September.

The black granite headstone with gilt lettering was provided by stone masons Walker Brothers of Cockermouth.

The headstone, put in place last week, reads: "In memory of baby Lara."

It is followed by a simple passage from the bible: "Jesus said: 'Let the children come to me'."

'Always remembered'

Dozens of Cumbria Police officers turned out for the service which was led by Camerton vicar Ian Grainger.

A tiny casket carried the remains of the baby for the service in St Paul's Church, Seaton.

A small bouquet of flowers from Operation Lara officers said simply: "In memory of Lara - a baby girl who will always be remembered."

Lara, aged between four and six months when she was killed, lay undiscovered until the concrete block was smashed open in a garage in Barepot, near Workington.

Lara had been beaten and buried alive up to 15 years ago, but those responsible have never been found.
