Raiders used a JCB to ram a bank during an attempted burglary in a West Cumbrian town, police said.
The incident happened at the HSBC bank in King Street, Aspatria, early on Friday, and involved a digger stolen from the nearby village of Arkleby.
Cumbria Police said no money was stolen in the raid.
The JCB has been removed from the bank, which suffered significant damage, and an engineer will assess whether there is any danger to the public.
Police are keen to trace a white Toyota Hilux pickup which is believed to have been used by the raiders.
It may have been abandoned, but police are warning that if there is anybody in the vehicle they should not be approached.
