Historic castle begins spook hunt

The tapestry room has seen ghostly apparitions

A reputedly haunted Cumbrian castle is recruiting online ghost hunters to monitor spooky goings-on there.

A web camera has been installed in the tapestry room at Muncaster Castle in the Lake District.

The move coincides with the visit of a paranormal investigation team to the castle over Halloween.

For years visitors to the 13th century castle have reported ghostly figures of women and children in the tapestry room, which was once used as a nursery.

'Ghostly experiences'

Muncaster Castle lies above the River Esk and has remained in the same family, the Penningtons, since 1208.

The oldest part of the castle as it stands, is the Pele Tower of 1325. This was reportedly built to keep out the Scots.

Peter Frost Pennington said: "The tapestry room used to be a guest bedroom for friends and family.

"But so many people ended up complaining of having ghostly experiences in the room that we had to stop using it."

The camera is due to remain in the tapestry room for a week after Halloween night.
