Transport aids mobility problems
A special service is being set up for Carlisle residents who have difficulty accessing public transport.

The City Wheels project will provide a new dial-a-ride service for people whose mobility problems mean they cannot use the bus.

Once signed up to the service, people can ring in advance to arrange transport in an accessible vehicle.

They can then travel anywhere within the city limits for a flat rate fee, and carers can travel free of charge.

The scheme has been set up by Cumbria County Council and Carlisle City Council with funding from the Department of Transport.

Councillor Kevan Wilkinson, Cumbria County Council cabinet spokesman for transport, said: "This will help people with some of the most difficult mobility problems to get around the city.

"It shows the county council's commitment to putting people first and finding innovative ways of helping people get around."

City Wheels is expected to be up and running by July.
