Concerns over mental health plans
Hospital bosses in Cumbria have defended plans to close wards treating people with mental health problems and switch resources to community care.

Morecambe Bay Primary Care Trust is considering closing two wards at Kendal's Westmoreland General Hospital.

Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, said he fears patients and families will suffer.

But trust chief executive, Dr Leigh Griffin, said the plans, which are out to public consultation, will save cash.

Dr Griffin said: "The proposals we are focusing on are to change the model of care for older people with mental health problems in the Kendal and south Lakes area.

'Younger adults'

"This would be done by putting the investment we currently place in staffing a ward at Westmoreland General into community services.

"The other is to transfer a ward for younger adults to a vacant ward in Lancaster.

"This will help some patients but disadvantage others and we recognise that."

Mr Farron said: "My concern is that the driving force here is to save money.

"I understand that the PCT have to do this, but the government must be prepared to put more cash into these services."

The public consultation process is due to last three months.
