A crumbling railway station is to be renovated by a Carlisle-based company.

Rail freight firm, Direct Rail Services (DRS), has promised to restore Sellafield station to its former glory.

The company is responsible for transporting spent nuclear fuel from the UK's power stations to Sellafield for reprocessing.

It intends to use the station, which has not been manned for years, as a base for operations. Work begins next week and the station will open in 2006.

DRS Managing Director, Neil McNicholas, said: "We are delighted to have been able to secure the use of this building.

"As well as being an extremely useful operational base for our services into Sellafield, the renovation of the station will make an important contribution to the local community.

"Despite having been allowed to become a bit of an eyesore over the last few years, the building is an extremely interesting piece of railway architecture."
