A flotilla of boats was taking to the waters of Windermere on Friday for an event to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The North West War Pensions Committee and ex-service charities have organised the event.
Veterans and war widows will board steamers on the lake and there will be a fly-past salute from the Red Arrows, a spitfire and a wartime heavy bomber.
It also aims to raise awareness of the help and advice available to veterans.
Stephen Overton, from the North West War Pensions Committee, said: "Our aim is to honour and thank them with an unequivocal demonstration of our care, support and gratitude in these peaceful and beautiful surroundings of the Lake District.
"They deserve to experience a sublime, enjoyable and memorable day."
