Traffic lights to be switched off
A red traffic light
The lights will be turned off from 7 March.
Traffic lights at Carlisle's busiest roundabout are to be switched off for a six month experiment.

The lights were knocked out during the recent flooding in the city and it is thought traffic flow around the area improved as a result.

Before the severe weather hit, there had been a great deal of debate about congestion on the city's streets.

Now Cumbria County Council has agreed to switch them off for a trial run from 7 March.

Councillor Kevan Wilkinson said: "The general perception of the public is that they are better off without the lights.

"The professional opinion and the statistics actually say the reverse of that but we have taken the decision that from 7 March we are going to turn the traffic lights off in Hardwick Circus for six months."
