Road safety work to get underway
More than £1m is to be spent on safety and resurfacing work on two trunk roads in Cumbria.

The £620,000 work on the A66 includes resurfacing projects and interactive signs to warn drivers when they are exceeding the speed limit.

A further £560,000 has been put aside to resurface sections of the A590.

The work, which will involve lane closures and contra-flow systems,is being carried out in January to avoid disrupting the tourist season.

The A590 will be resurfaced at Newby Bridge, Greennodd, Backbarrow and Oubas Hill in Ulverston.

'Interactive signs'

Work will also be carried out on the A66 in four sections.

These are between Dubwath and Enbleton, Flusco and Newbiggin, Slapestone roundabout to Auldby Farm, and alongside Bassenthwaite Lake.

Highways Agency project manager, Phil Davis, said: "The A66 is a popular tourist route and all work, weather permitting, is due to be finished before the main holiday season begins.

"The old surface will be replaced with the latest materials and techniques, which will minimise spray.

"Interactive signs are being introduced to warn motorists if they are speeding, following a series of accidents."
