Green light for retail proposals
A new retail development has taken a step closer after the government signalled its approval of major new plans for in Penrith.

A proposed £30m scheme for the southern end of Penrith could see a Tesco superstore, as well as other retail and sports facilities.

The plans are so big that government approval was needed before they could even begin the formal planning process. Those behind the proposals hope they will breathe new life into the town.

It is hoped more visitors would also been encouraged to the area.

John Prescott, the deputy prime minister, gave the proposals - which include 21 shops, car parking and a sports ground in the Southend Road area - the green light.

Planners will now be asked to consider the proposals in detail.
